Important changes to legislation for Norfolk Island

The following is information for current policy holders travelling between mainland Australia and Norfolk Island.

FAQ 1 - How does this affect my travel insurance when travelling from mainland Australia to Norfolk Island?

As a consequence of the change in legislation, from 1 July 2016:

  1. Cover under Benefit 1: Medical Expenses Overseas (page 28) of your policy will not extend to claims made in connection with a trip from mainland Australia to Norfolk Island.

  1. Exclusions 2, 3 and 4 (page 29) and General Exclusions 4, 13 and 14 (pages 53-54) which exclude medical and/or dental costs incurred in Australia and private hospital or medical treatment where public funded services or care was available in Australia, may apply to exclude cover under Benefit 1  in relation to a claim made in connection with a trip from mainland Australia to Norfolk Island.

However, you may have cover for some medical expenses incurred on a cruise ship. Please see FAQ 3 below.

The Australian Government has stated that it will pay for emergency transport to the mainland for medical reasons, similar to arrangements in other remote island communities such as Christmas Island. Here is more information.

Following a serious injury or illness, please make sure that you contact our Emergency Assistance team to help co-ordinate any necessary medical evacuation to appropriate medical facilities.

FAQ 2 - I'm from Norfolk Island. How will the changes to legislation affect my travel insurance cover to mainland Australia?

With cover under Benefit 1 no longer extending to travel to mainland Australia from 1 July 2016, the terms and conditions of any endorsement issued with your policy for medical cover in Australia will also no longer apply from then.

FAQ 3 - I will be on a cruise that includes Norfolk Island; am I still covered to see the doctor on the ship?

If your trip destination on your Certificate of Insurance states Norfolk Island, South Pacific Cruise, Pacific or Australian Waters, then the cover under Benefit 1: Medical Expenses Overseas (page 28 of the PDS) will apply to a claim for medical expenses incurred if you are on the ship or if your medical evacuation is directly from the ship.

However, if you come off the ship at  Norfolk Island for treatment, then from 1 July 2016, your policy will not cover medical expenses which would otherwise be covered under Benefit 1: Medical Expenses Overseas.

If you have not commenced your trip, we recommend that you take your Medicare card with you should you need to receive medical treatment on Norfolk Island.

The Australian Government has stated that it will pay for emergency transport from Norfolk Island to the mainland for medical reasons, similar to arrangements in other remote island communities such as Christmas Island. Here is more information.

However, you will still need to contact our Emergency Assistance team for help coordinating your evacuation to the closest appropriate mainland hospital.

Please note that our Domestic/Australia travel insurance policies do not provide any cover for medical treatment, road ambulance or medications in Australia (including on Norfolk Island). Therefore, if you have purchased a Domestic/Australia plan, then you will not be covered for medical treatment either on the ship or elsewhere in Australia or overseas.

FAQ 4 - Can I buy my Australian prescription medication in Norfolk Island?

While we always suggest that customers carry enough medication to last for their trip, if you purchase medication on Norfolk Island, then the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme will apply to Norfolk Island.

If you haven’t started travelling yet, please ensure you take your Medicare card and prescription.

FAQ 5 - Do I need to change my policy?

Your policy terms have not changed, however under the legislation, the Australian Government will integrate Norfolk Island with the mainland tax and social security systems, including access to Medicare and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and, therefore, medical expenses will be covered under Medicare.
