Zika Virus - Information for Travellers

(As at 4/2/16)

The explosive outbreak of the Zika virus has led to The World Health Organisation officially declaring the Zika virus and its suspected link to microcephaly an international public health emergency. Given the possible transmission of the disease to unborn babies, and taking a very cautious approach, DFAT are advising pregnant women to consider postponing travel to countries affected by the virus.

SureSave policies are designed to respond to specific events, including outbreaks of transmissible diseases.

For policies purchased on or before 23.59 AET on the dates noted in the table below, the following cover is available under your policy:

Benefit 3 – Pre-trip Cancellation/Rearrangement:

For those travellers who are pregnant (in any trimester) and have to cancel or rearrange their travel plans to avoid travelling to affected countries/territories listed above while pregnant, cover is available (for them and their partner/dependants on their policy) for the lesser of cancellation or rearrangement costs.

Benefit 3 – Cancellation during travel:

For those travellers who are pregnant (in any trimester) at the time of travel and have to cancel their pre-paid travel arrangements to avoid travelling to affected countries/territories listed above, cover is available (for them and their partner/dependants on their policy) for cancellation costs.

No cover is provided for Cancellation/Rearrangement costs if you are not pregnant at the time of travel to these countries. If you wish to change your travel plans, contact your travel service providers directly for assistance.

Cancellation cover is not available under policies purchased after the above dates for the affected countries.

Benefit 1 – Medical Expenses Overseas:

For those travellers issued with a policy prior to suffering a sudden illness from the Zika virus, medical expenses and medical evacuation (where medically necessary) cover are available. If you suddenly fall ill, contact our Emergency Assistance team on +61 2 9234 3113 or +61 2 8256 1513 for assistance.

In the event of a claim covered by your policy, you must do everything you can to minimise and reduce the cost of the claim (including seeking compensation from any travel service providers), and provide all supporting documentation of the event and expenses incurred.
